Nearly 80 members step up to support ACEC's political action committees
Lobbying results show PACs work
A famous comedian used to quip, "Don't ever give money to politicians – it only encourages them!"
That's a funny line, and there's more than a grain of truth in it.
But in the real world – whether we like it or not – the reality is that any group of people that hopes to influence public policy must build relationships with elected officials who make that policy. And it's only human nature that a candidate for office is going to show more interest in people who actively support his candidacy than those who do not.
That's the essential reason for being behind political action committees.
Some people say, "I don't contribute to PACs because I don't believe in them," or "I don't like the campaign finance process." Those sentiments certainly are understandable. Not many of us would say we really like the role money plays in our political system.
But the reality is that this is the system we have, and until it's changed, business organizations such as ACEC must either get in the game and play by the rules, or get run over by those who do.
In 2012 nearly 80 ACEC Ohio members – some of whom undoubtedly have these kinds of personal reservations – pulled out their check books and wrote checks to help make ACEC's lobbying efforts in Washington and Columbus more effective.
Why? Because it works.
Just a few examples.
In the session of Congress just coming to and end, ACEC led the successful effort to repeal law that would have required government agencies to withhold payment of 3 percent of every one of your invoices. ACEC also helped repeal a law that would have required your firm to issue 1099 forms to virtually everyone with whom you do business.
At the state level, ACEC gained passage of legislation to eliminate the $25,000 exemption from the state's Qualifications-Based Selection law and put a new "direct selection" process in place to make it easier for local governments to award design contracts under $50,000.
Thank you to these ACEC Ohio members who made successes like these possible by contributing to the state PAC, the national PAC, and in many cases both, in 2012.
